III - GANDHI JAYANTHI

        Gandhi Jayanthi was on October 2, a National Holiday for the country. Gandhi believed in work, hard work.   If we have to honour that personality of Gandhi, Ghandhi Jayanthi s  hould be celebrated by putting in extra hours (2-3 hours minimum) of work than usual by each one of us. Instead we just sit and laze around the day!! Does Mahathma Gandhi deserve this insult ????

          But again, the question arises to how much Mohandas Karamchand Ghandhi is important to us in the present day context. It is time we examined the relevance of Gandhi Jayanthi to the present day India, inspite of accepting the fact that he (Gandhi) played a key role in gaining independence for our country.

          I find it difficult to accept these "false" nationalistic sentiments, when thousands and thousands are starving in different parts of the country, under the bondage of poverty. Gandhi probably freed the land from the Britishers (which we would have achieved without his efforts if we had waited for few more years), but did he honestly free the people of India from the bondage of poverty? Still to be debated upon!!

          Our leaders keep on preaching to us to live in the Charkka world and wear khadi cloths. In a way, they are telling us to "stay primitive and never develop". I am sure a Nationalistic Gandhi would never have prescribed to us the charkka & khadi if he were alive today. AND, we would not have been holidaying (lazying) on Gandhi Jayanthi day! Who knows, probably we would never have a holiday "Gandhi Jayanthi" !!!!
